Black-figure amphora

A god, presumably Zeus, is seated on a chair. He is represented
with head and legs in profile to the right, the body
almost facing. Seated he is almost as tall as the surrounding
standing figures. The right forearm is extended almost horizontally
forward, the hand with extended fingers seen on the
back. The left arm is extended obliquely upward, the hand
holding a staff. The god has a pointed beard and wears his
long hair loose. His dress consists of a chiton and a himation,
which covers the upper arms.
There are four other deities on the picture. At the right
side stand a goddess, the left arm raised, the right arm
hanging down, Hermes, identified by the petasos and the
endromides, and Ares, characterised as such by helmet, shield and
greaves. At the left stands Dionysos only, identified by
wreath and drinking horn.
The chair has plain curved legs and a curved back, ending
in a swan's head.
A small figure of a winged sphinx is seen between the
legs of the chair. Meaningless inscriptions are seen in the
field.
